Shit Hardcore Kids Wish They Could Play: Episode 9

For a dude from the south, he's pretty fucking pale

We've featured lots of bands on this little ol' blog of ours, but it's come to my attention that none of them have been one man bands. We've featured a couple duos, but never just one solitary dude. Until now, that is, and I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, this may very well be the best one man band I've ever heard. Hailing from Houston, Texas, the band in question is Insidious Decrepancy, aka Shawn Whitaker.

Mr. Whitaker has been a key member of many bands over the years, most notably as the frontman/lead guitarist of Viral Load, but Insidious Decrepancy is without a doubt his brainchild and his alone. The riffs, harmonies and leads are definitely not meant to be attempted by novices, and to add to it he simultaneously does his instantly recognizable vocals. Are they gutturals, or are they growls? I honestly can't tell sometimes, but the point is nobody else sounds like him. And what's more the dude knows what he's doing when he programs the drums too, so much so that they don't even sound like a drum machine. Good luck trying to play it though, I can tell you from experience that it's pretty much impossible. But don't take my word for it, check it out yourself. From his 2009 album Extirpating Omniscient Certitude, this is the opening track "Contemptuous Inception".

Insidious Decrepancy's discography is available now through Brutal Bands Records, and his main project Viral Load just put out a split with the equally awesome one man band Putrid Pile a couple months ago on Relapse Records. Be sure to give them all a listen if you're looking for top notch brutal death metal. Like always, give us your thoughts and/or any suggestions for bands you think we should do an article on here below. Take care, and happy Tuesday.
